Our Four Strategic Goals
New ways of working are reshaping careers and workplaces. At the same time, economic pressures, regulatory change and growing demands on the justice system continue to challenge the profession.
4 Strategic Goals
Creating a Proud Professional Community
Creating a proud professional community starts with putting members at the centre of everything CILEX does, supporting their development, career progression and professional success while advancing the public interest. To achieve this, CILEX will improve clarity around membership grades, titles and practice rights, enhance the member experience through simpler processes and better service, and deliver a clear, compelling value proposition tailored to different career stages and practice areas. We will also work closely with members and employers to ensure the value and contribution of CILEX Chartered Lawyers is better understood by both the profession and the public.
We'll also create more opportunities for members to shape the future of CILEX through consultation, advocacy and collaboration, ensuring your voice helps drive the decisions that affect your career and profession.
Working Closely with its Regulator
CILEX will ensure pathways and authorisation processes are transparent, compliant and easy to navigate. The strategy also prioritises greater member engagement through expanded Specialist Reference Groups, a continued commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a review of how the CILEX Foundation can best support those most in need. Underpinned by stronger data and digital capabilities, these initiatives will create a more connected, inclusive and engaged professional community while delivering a consistently excellent member experience.
Driving Change and Elevating our Profile
Driving change and elevating CILEX's profile is essential to increasing its influence, strengthening member value and securing wider recognition of specialist lawyers within the legal sector. CILEX will address ongoing misconceptions about its qualifications, practice rights and professional standing by delivering clearer, more consistent messaging and a stronger external profile. We will continue to challenge barriers, outdated assumptions and unnecessary restrictions that limit opportunities for CILEX members.
We'll build a stronger voice for CILEX by engaging more effectively with government, regulators, employers and the media, ensuring our members and their contributions to the legal sector are properly recognised.
Influencing Policy and Regulation
CILEX will strengthen its engagement with policymakers to advocate for the full recognition of specialist lawyers in all areas of legal practice. By building stronger relationships with the Legal Services Board, the Solicitors Regulation Authority and other bodies, CILEX will work to remove remaining barriers and ensure its members can compete fairly within the legal market. We will continue to secure recognition of CILEX Chartered Lawyers alongside solicitors and barristers in legislation, policy and practice.
Providing Excellent Education for a Growing Profession
Providing excellent education for a growing profession means strengthening CILEX's position as a recognised, regulated and practice-focused route into law while ensuring its qualifications remain relevant, accessible and future-ready. CILEX will review and refresh its qualification portfolio to better reflect the evolving needs of employers and the changing landscape of legal practice. Our qualifications and learning pathways will continue to provide flexible, practice-based routes into law that meet the future needs of learners, employers and the profession.
We're committed to making a legal career accessible to everyone, regardless of background. CILEX's qualifications offer a practical, affordable and high-quality route into law that delivers real outcomes for learners and employers alike.
Investing in Learner Experience
CILEX will invest in improving the learner journey from initial enrolment through to qualification and beyond. This means working more closely with approved centres, improving digital learning resources, and ensuring learners receive the support they need to succeed. CILEX will also develop clearer progression pathways to help members advance their careers with confidence, ensuring talented people from all backgrounds can access, progress and succeed in legal careers.
Building firm foundations
Building firm foundations for a sustainable future means ensuring CILEX remains resilient, efficient and adaptable in a rapidly changing legal and technological landscape. CILEX will strengthen its digital capabilities, governance, financial sustainability and operational effectiveness to deliver greater value for members, employers and stakeholders.
A sustainable CILEX is one that can adapt, innovate and serve its members well for decades to come. We're investing in the right foundations now so that we can continue to fulfil our mission and deliver lasting value to members and the profession.
Strengthening governance and operations
CILEX will review and strengthen its governance structures to ensure clear accountability, transparency and effective decision-making at all levels. Investment in technology, data and digital capability will support more efficient operations and better-informed strategy. Financial resilience will be built through diversified income streams and careful stewardship of resources, ensuring CILEX can serve its members and the profession for the long term.
